About Carlsbad Historical Society

The Carlsbad Historical Society was established in 1975 to preserve, promote, and enhance knowledge of the surrounding area's history, significant landmarks, institutions and memorabilia.     The picture showing the first Carlsbad sign is a great find! It appears the view behind the sign is toward the south that is looking directly into what is now Lincoln Street between Oak and “Elm” (now Carlsbad Village Drive). The picture appears to have been taken before the Coast Highway road was curved westward toward the beach where it is today. Is that a correct observation? About what year was the picture taken?

      At the Shipley-Magee House there is a 1920’s picture that shows that the road was already curved.

        Is it known over which street the first Carlsbad sign was erected? Could it have been State Street?
